  5. The ULTRA 14F is a high performance ISA to SCSI host adapter supporting up to
  6. 7 SCSI devices (or up to 56 devices if a SCSI bridge controller is used).
  7. The host adapter is designed to support a variety of SCSI devices such as
  8. Hard disk, Tape, CDROM, DAT, WORM, MO rewritable disk, Scanner, Laser
  9. printer, etc..  A high speed 32 bit micro-processor provides the local
  10. intelligence for host adapter command processing.

  12. The intelligent host adapter features first party DMA data transfers up to 
  13. 10MBytes/sec, low overhead SCSI command processing, command queuing,
  14. multi-threaded operation, scatter/gather, and disk defect management.
  15.  
  16. The ULTRA 14F host adapter conforms to the industry standard SCSI-1 and SCSI-2
  17. specification.  It automatically negotiates for Fast, synchronous and/or asyn-
  18. chronous data transfers without host/user intervention.  SCSI features such as
  19. disconnect/reselect, command linking, and command queuing are implemented to
  20. full advantage of a multitasking environments.

  22. The on-board BIOS allows OS drivers to interface efficiently to the host
  23. adapter and also provides users the ease of installing SCSI drives to the
  24. system.

  26. In order to achieve the full advantage from the high speed ISA interface
  27. while maintaining the downward compatibility with the current ISA disk BIOS
  28. and disk device driver, the ULTRA 14F provides dual sets of interface protocol
  29. on the host side, ISA mode and enhanced Bus Master mode.

  31. The ISA mode is the industry standard (WD1003 compatible) task file register
  32. interface, which provides compatibilty with most currently available operating
  33. system disk device drivers.  It uses the Task File Register command interface
  34. and 16 bits PIO data transfer.  The industry standard task file registers
  35. (TFR) and full ISA disk command set are implemented for the current ISA
  36. protocol.  Under the ISA compatible mode, the ULTRA 14F can function with up
  37. to 2 SCSI disk drives without requiring any device driver in any operating
  38. system, providing backward compatibility with all PC operating systems and
  39. thousands of existing PC/AT hardware, software and applications currently on
  40. the market.

  42. In the enhanced Bus Master mode, a multi-thread, Mail-Box type, Bus Master
  43. protocol is implemented to reduce system CPU intervention and data command
  44. transaction overhead.  Under the Bus Master enhanced mode operation, the host
  45. adapter will operate with a Bus Master data transfer rate up to 10Mbytes per
  46. second.  Due to its efficient Bus Master command protocol, the system CPU is
  47. free most of the time to do other tasks while the host adapter's local CPU
  48. does all the command processing, SCSI device accessing and data transfer
  49. operation.  It interrupts the system CPU only when the command is completed or
  50. when an error has occurred.
